108 emergency response team prevents suicide

SHILLONG, Jul 4: The quick response and professionalism of the 108 emergency team prevented a person from committing suicide on the night of July 3.

According to the 108 emergency service, On July 3 at around at 11:45 pm a call landed in 108 Emergency Response Center from a Landline Number.

The caller told the 108 emergency service team that he was calling from Laitkor near BSNL quarter and that he was going to commit suicide’.

“On hearing this 108 Emergency Response Officer Thuester R Marak on duty and Supervisor Eva Sawian immediately acted and started counselling and convincing him not to do so by engaging him in conversation,” the 108 emergency service said.

They stated that on probing further he confided in them that he is 27 years old and his girlfriend cheated him after a three years long relationship and that now she is getting married elsewhere and he loved her too much that he cannot live without her.

The 108 team immediately alerted Madanriting police station.

According to the 108 emergency team the victim stated that the reason for him to call 108 was because it gave “hope” and he expected the same from them.

The person also said that if the call is disconnected then he will kill himself.

“The 108 Team on call assured him that they will not do so, while talking to him calming him requested who is with him at home and he told that his father was out of station and only his mother was at home,” the 108 emergency service team said.

The 108 team requested him to hand over the phone to his mother.

“On speaking to his mother she informed that she is also helpless as there is no male member at home to help her stop her son from harming himself. She said that he is madly in love with this girl and now she has cheated him,” the 108 emergency response team added.

While the police was in conference call as the 108 team probed for the location, landmark and provided the rest of the details to the police.

The 108 team counselled the victim for 1 hour and 50 minutes till the police reached and rescued the victim with minor cut injuries in his neck and hands.

The victim was first shifted to MIMHANS first and then to Civil hospital. The victim is in police custody for now.

Appreciating the effort the Health Secretary said, “Very good effort. You have saved a life, congratulation, your alertness and care has saved a life, it is your success story.”
