Tura, Mar 22: A former cadre of the Garo National Liberation Army (GNLA) and his associate surrendered today to the West Garo Hills police in Tura after persuasion by members of the Church to give up arms.
Silgrak D Sangma (Kalu) was a 4th batch cadre of the GNLA before being arrested and later released on bail. He however did not rejoin the GNLA after his release and chose to form his own gang of criminals. Kalu is a resident of Maguapara under Dalu PS while his associate Bushtin D Sangma is also of the same village.
“Extensive CI ops were carried out to nab these two culprits while efforts were being made by his family through the Church to reach out to them to surrender and shun violence. They chose to listen to their family and the Church after being persuaded by them and gave themselves up today near Dalu,” said superintendent of police, WGH, Dr MGR Kumar.
The surrendered cadres surrendered two pistols, 8 rounds of 7.65 ammunition along with 2 mobile phones.
A Church service was later held during the surrender ceremony after which they were sent to a rehabilitation centre to enable them to lead a normal life.
