Shillong, Mar 17: Power Minister James Sangma today informed that 3152 consumers have availed the scheme in his reply to a question on One-Time Settlement Scheme during question hour.
As of February 28th 2021, a total of Rs 19.02 crores has been collected from 10 districts, he stated, adding that only South Garo Hills district had no consumers who availed the scheme.
On a supplementary question by Umroi MLA George Lyngdoh on the total number of consumers targeted, James stated that although he didn’t have the number, the outstanding dues owed to MePDCL were Rs 554.7 crores as of December 2020.
He stated that the corporation decided to go ahead with disconnection because of urgency to recover dues, and that through the process some consumers turned up to pay their bills.
The Umroi MLA then questioned as to why the corporation is not willing to accept 50 percent of total bill payment under the OTS scheme, citing an example of a consumer he talked to.
The Minister responded that the OTS scheme is flexible and if need arises payment can be done in instalments.
“The scheme has been extended till March 2021 and OTS scheme will not happen in next 5 years,” he added.
