8 illegal sawn timber-laden trucks seized in Ri Bhoi district

Nongpoh, Jan 20: In their continued efforts, the Ri bhoi police yesterday seized huge quantities of illegal sawn timber, with the consignment being worth lakhs in the open market, from Byrnihat under the district.

The illegal timber in the 8 Assam registered trucks was bound for the neighbouring state and was kept hidden inside the 8 trucks.

According to acting superintendent of police, JFK Marak, police had received information from sources about the movement of the timber in 8 Assam registered trucks.

“The timber trucks were detained outside our Outpost without any documents in Byrnihat. This came after we received information from sources,” said the SP, JFK Marak.

Interestingly the transporters had even tried to furnish documents to validate their consignment which was later found to be forged.

The timber, stacked in each truck, was tightly concealed with plastic and polythene tents. They were at least 10 ft in height.

Police informed that on questioning the sawn pine timber were to sent to towns of Jorhat, Kokrajhar, Hojai, Dhubri, Kanpur and Sonitpur in Assam as there is a huge demand for timber from these areas.

Timber seized today is thought to have originated from the districts of East and West Khasi Hills with the smugglers looking to take advantage of the transit of coal trucks allowed by the state government.
