992 students avails stipend from labour dept 

SHILLONG, Mar 23: The State’s Labour Department has extended stipends to 992 students whose parents are registered labourers, the Meghalaya Assembly was informed on Friday.

Replying during the Question Hour, Labour Minister Prestone Tynsong informed the House that students pursuing under graduate studies were given Rs 800 per month, those doing diploma courses and certificate courses were given Rs 600 per month, students of Class IX to Class XII were given Rs 600 those studying in classes VIII to X were given a stipend of Rs 500 per month.

Earlier, the Labour Minister informed that upto December, 2017 the amount of labour cess earned by the department was Rs 117.23 Crore out of which Rs 2,36 crore was utilised.

“The remaining amount is proposed to be utilised for schemes as laid down in the Meghalaya Building & Other Construction Workers (Regulation of Employment & Conditions of Service) Rules 2008 as amended and for administrative expenses,” Tynsong said.

He also informed the House that the Labour cess was collected from different state government departments like the PWD, PHE, Animal Husbandry and Veterinary, MeECL, MUDA, MES/BSF/Garrison Engineer and other central government agencies like NEHU, NEIGRIHMS, NESAC, CPWD, BSNL, NHAI, NBCC, NEEPCO and Powergrid.
