Tura, Mar 17: The Anti Corruption and Human Development Organization (ACHDO) has demanded from the state government to reconstruct the road connecting the villages of Bholarbitha and Kaplarbitha in West Garo Hills
The Garo Hills based NGO alleged that the road construction was poorly done despite their objections.
“The construction was done forcefully by the contractor with support from certain quarters,” ACHDO alleged.
In a statement issued to the media on Sunday, general secretary, Ashidur Sheikh, who is also a resident of the area said, “We want to bring this to the notice of the PWD Roads authorities. Due to the poor road quality, people from the area had stopped work but after a day, the road construction work began without any change in the quality. The road construction workers would not even inform us about the name of the contractor so that we could forward a complaint.”
The NGO complained that the road was supposed to be done with three layers of materials but there are only two layers. Further the road is also narrow in most places when it should have been uniform.
Following complaints, a team from the NGO led by coordinator Jahangir Ali went to inspect the road and was surprised to find chunks of tar coming out when they inserted their fingers into it.
The NGO blamed the greed of the contractor which has denied the villagers a quality road and wanted action against them.
“The matter should be taken seriously and the government should act on the poor quality construction of road.
“Within few months the same road will become ponds with potholes and same needs to be constructed. This is nothing but a waste of public funds. We urge the authorities to act on the matter and demand that the pending money to the contractor should not be released,” said the NGO.
