Adelbert: It bothers me that govt in denial sex trade exists in Khyndailad

Shillong, Mar 19: North Shillong MLA, Adelbert Nongrum on Friday said that what bothers him is the denial of the State government that sex trade exists in Khyndailad. Moving a “Half Hour Discussion”, on the issue, Nongrum said, “Well it seems the government does not believe in me.”

He said that from social media reports the police department was fully aware of the Khyndailad issue, even as he added that he was neither against the government nor the unfortunate women.

“My intention is to get the government and the lawmakers to accept the reality and to do something about it,” Nongrum said.

The North Shillong MLA also requested the State government to conduct a study on how many women are involved in the sex trade in Meghalaya, the estimated number of children whose mothers depend on sex trade, reasons for getting involved in the trade and estimate of those who are willing to lead a normal life if they get proper opportunities.

In reply, Home Minister Lahkmen Rymbui giving a district wise breakup of the female sex workers registered with NGOs in the State informed that in East Khasi Hills with Manbha Foundation 371 female sex workers are registered, 380 with Mihmyntdu Community Social Welfare Association in West Jaintia Hills, 157 with Mihmyntdu Community Social Welfare Association in East Jaintia Hills, 305 with KJPA SELDA in Ri-Bhoi and 300 with ADIL Gandhian Society in South Garo Hills.

The Home Minister also informed that the state government through the Meghalaya Aids Control Society (MACS) has been working for the rehabilitation of the sex workers.

He also told the House that provision of Drop In Centre where a safe space is provided for the targeted population with facilities of counseling centre, recreational centre, health check up, access to contraceptives, IEC materials.

Home Minister further informed that in East Khasi Hills, regular checking of hotels/lodges/guest houses located in Khyndailad area is being conducted and verification of those individuals staying in the hotels/lodges are being done.

“Anti Human Trafficking Unit of East Khasi Hills also conduct raids when reports about immoral activities are being received. Foot patrolling and night patrolling are being carried out at regular intervals by police officers and personnel of East Khasi Hills,” Rymbui stated.

According to the Home Minister, a special women cell has been set at Sadar Police Station exclusively dealing with cases of sexual assault, domestic violence, missing cases and immoral trafficking.
