Agnes alleges illegal coal mining in East Jaiñtia Hills

Shillong, Sep 22: Activist Agnes Kharshiing on Tuesday wrote to Meghalaya Director General of Police (DGP) R. Chandranathan alleging illegal transportation of coal and mining in East Jaintia Hills.

“There are also reports of illegal coal mining going on which is in violation of Supreme Court and NGT orders,” the activist said in her letter to the DGP.

Kharshiing alleged that hundreds of coal trucks are illegally moving from East Jaintia Hills and have already start moving from Monday night.

According to her, people are issued permission for transportation of coal from three places most likely Umtyra, Ratachera and DC circle but instead are buying from the road side.

According to Kharshiing and some of her sources the violators, will use the challan without seal and same challan for many trucks having illegal coal and the trucks are overloaded.

“Challan was issued only with conditions, but the trucks are overloaded and buying not from the designated points,” she alleged

“This is a criminal act and I urge that you may please inform and alert DC, SP East Jaintia Hills, DC, SP West Jaintia Hills, DC and SP East Khasi Hills District, DC and SP Ri Bhoi District , DGP Assam Police” Agnes stated.

She also said authorities should check and verify and maintain the copy of each challan.

“Kindly get an investigation done on who is the mastermind and who in the Government allowing this violation and cheating the revenue of the government,” Kharshiing said.
