Tura, Apr 4: Political rivalry in the Phulbari region seems to be getting uglier in the Phulbari region after another Congress worker was allegedly beaten up by the brother of the current NPP MLA from Phulbari, SG Esmatur Mominin.
The current allegation comes in the wake of a teacher who had supported the Congress candidate and former Speaker, AT Mondal, being assaulted to the extent of him being hospitalized though police later allowed the accused to be released on a bail bond.
An FIR was filed by one Shah Alam of Chibinang who, according to the FIR was shopping in the village when he was stopped by the brother of the MLA, Jelemur Islam Sarkar along with a group of NPP supporters who began to abuse and threaten him without any form of provocation.
“I had gone to the market to buy goods when he (Sarkar) and his friends came towards me and started abusing me and then assaulted me. He randomly beat me up all the while abusing me and asking as to why I worked with the Congress party. I was in mental shock and had injuries all over my body,” said the complainant.
The incident took place at about 12:10 pm on April 3 in the main Chibinang Market with the FIR being filed at the Phulbari PS in West Garo Hills.
Following the incident, the superintendent of police, WGH, Dr MGR Kumar has sought a full report on the matter from the Circle Inspector (CI) of Phulbari.
“I am awaiting details of his (CI) report before any action is initiated. We will get to the bottom of what happened and action will follow,” said Dr Kumar.
Meanwhile Congress workers, mostly in the Chibinang region of Phulbari have expressed anguish over the continued violence against them and the official inaction despite police complaints being filed.
“Politics is a choice and we chose to be with the Congress. We can’t understand as to why no action is being taken when our freedom to choose is being threatened. The situation for us is very bad as there is no one taking any action to stop this menacing acts of the NPP workers in the constituency,” said a Congress worker on the condition of anonymity.
