‘Ambulances are an asset, can be used for 10-15 years’

Shillong, May 5: Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma, on Tuesday, stated that the reason the government invested on ambulances using the contribution from the CM’s Relief Fund was because they were an asset that can be used for 10-15 years.

“Ambulances will help people in general and the health sector will benefit from it. We felt that investing in it would be more meaningful. Of course, we could have spent on other things also but I think having an asset created would serve the people for the years to come,” he said.

He informed that the government received Rs 7 crore 95 lakh in donations to the Meghalaya CM”s Relief Fund, out of which Rs 4.5 crore was used to buy 25 ambulances.

“We have about 3 plus crores left, we will decide on how to utilize them. We may invest some in the Corona Care Centres and but we will see what will be in the best interest of the people and then decide,” Conrad said.

The Chief Minister also lauded the efforts of 108 and their role in the health sector. “108 has been playing a very important role in the health sector, and they have been asking us to invest in their ambulances in the past also,” he said.

Further, he said that providing ambulances to GVK would ensure that they utilize the ambulances in a professional manner.

“They have a strong network. Keeping these factors in mind, and to ensure that service is given to the people at the grass root we felt that we should work with GVK,” he said.

He also declared that the government will ensure the ambulances will be used mostly in rural areas. “For the time being we are using it in Shillong and other urban areas due to the COVID situation, as things improve our ultimate goal is to use it in urban areas where it is required a lot,” he added.
