Assam trader kidnapped from East Garo Hills

Tura, Nov 13: Assam based trader was allegedly kidnapped on Tuesday morning from near the village of Rongsak in East Garo Hills (EGH) by a group of 5-6 small time criminals.

A merchant from Krishnai in Goalpara district of Assam was on way to the weekly market of Rongsak when he was abducted from near the village of Bansam Awe, police sources said.

The village falls under the newly created police station of Chiading in EGH.

The abducted trader has been identified as one Tapos Majhi (37).

“He was kidnapped by a bike borne gang near the village of Bansam Awe with the criminals numbering about 5-6. They stopped the vehicle in which he was travelling and took him at gun point. All the kidnappers had their faces concealed with cloth during the incident,” said superintendent of police, Ringrang TG Momin.

One of the bikes used during the kidnapping was later recovered along the same route. Police sources felt the kidnapping was the handiwork of criminals who may have got their hands on some weapons. A search operation to rescue the victim is currently under way.
