Assembly Speaker visits flood and landslide affected West Khasi hills

Shillong, Sept 27: Assembly Speaker and Mairang MLA, Mairang inspected landslides and flood hit areas of West Khasi hills areas under Mairang and Nongstoiñ constituency on Saturday.

He was accompanied by West Khasi Hills Deputy Commissioner Tableland Lyngwa, West Khasi Hills SP Herbert Lyngdoh, Secretary PWD (Roads) Pius Marweiñ, CE National highway Bruce Marak and others.

Various places under West Khasi Hills have been severely hit by floods and major landslides triggered by incessant rain this week leaving many areas especially roads in precarious condition and possible threats of collapse.

At first, Assembly Speaker Metbah Lyngdoh visited the landslide affected site at Sohïong of the Shillong-Nongstoiñ byepass which have put the traveller’s in acute danger.

Later, Metbah visited landslide affected places of Mairang, Kynshi area and Nongstoiñ Byepass road to Tura at Pyndengrei.

The Assembly Speaker have demanded immediate clearance of mud and slush from the area citing that further flash flood cannot be denied if rain continues.

Metbah directed the departmental officials to find immediate solutions in regard to clearance of debris from the site and protective wall construction to be initiated at the site.

It may be mentioned here that flash flood in Sohiong has caused massive landslips, in Mairang and Kynshi some houses have suffered damages in landslides and the people have lost their cultivable lands.

Mairang MLA also directed the government officials to assess the damages and loss suffered by people in landslides.

He advised the government officials to prepare detailed reports and submit the same to higher authority.

The Assembly Speaker also visited the Sohpian-Nongstoiñ road which has been sanctioned of an amount Rs 12 Cr.

Meanwhile, the officers has assured the Assembly Speaker to clear the debris in two-three days, to ease the commuters traveling via Nongstoiñ to Tura.
