Autonomous district council polls records 76 pc voting

SHILLONG, Feb 27: An over-all percentage of 76 pc voting was recorded to the two Houses of the autonomous district council that went to polls on Wednesday. However, this is not the final percentage since tabulation is going on, officials said.

According to the Commissioner and Secretary, District Council Affairs department, Tining Dkhar, at 9 pm the voters’ turn out in Jaintia Hills Autonomous District Council (JHADC) was 85.60 per cent and in Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) it was around 76.63 percent.

“These figures are not the final ones but only provisional as the tabulation and compilation of datas and figures will be forwarded by DCs and ROs I hope tomorrow by 11 am we should be able to give the exact and final figures of voters turnout including constituency wise,” Dkhar said.

He also said that he expect the percentage will be decent one because compared to the 2014 elections in KHADC it was 72 percent and in JHADC it was about 79 percent.

“The success of the election is not only the cooperation of DC but polling parties, zonal magistrate, well and large is the active participation of the public in both the ADCs,” Dkhar said.

The Commissioner and Secretary also informed that the election process was by and large very peaceful there was no untoward incident. He also said that there is no report related to malpractices during the elections.

“It is worth mentioning that the EVMs utilised during this elections are very successful,” he said.

He also informed that in KHADC there were about seven EVMs and six in JHADC which malfunctioned and were replaced on time and polling went on smoothly.

The counting will be held on March 2.

Dkhar also informed that there will be live coverage from the NSCA stadium and the office have partnered with Batesi TV for the same.

“We appeal to the public not to rush to Polo stadium,” the Commissioner and Secretary said.

I thanked the voters of the Khasi and Jaintia Hills for exercising despite inclement weather.

Asked, he said the office f the District Council Affairs did not have any massive awareness campaign but DCs have made efforts to spread awareness to the voters to come and vote.
