Shillong, Jan 25: Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), legislator from South Shillong, Sanbor Shullai on Monday said that he was not aware about the state unit of the party demanding the resignation of Home Minister, Lahkmen Rymbui.
On Sunday, BJP’s state president, Ernest Mawrie sought the resignation of Rymbui for failing to curb illegal coal mining in the state, and sought an independent inquiry into the deaths of six labourers in a coal pit in the Rymbai Elaka of East Jaintia Hills on January 21.
“That is very wrong and we don’t know anything about it. That may be his personal statement,” Shullai told reporters.
The BJP legislator said he and most of the party members are in the dark (about the statements made by Mawrie).
“We just see that Ernest (Mawrie) and one or two others making statements. But that is not Meghalaya BJP. So this is the work of only a few,” Shullai said.
He was peeved at the fact that he and Cabinet Minister A. L. Hek were not consulted before, the state unit president made the statement to the media.
Shullai said that the state BJP chief knows that he and Hek are part of the government and the party had decided that if there are any issues with the government the coordination committee of the party consisting of the MLAs and party members would first discuss on the way forward.
He also said that even the coordination committee of the Meghalaya Democratic Alliance (MDA) had decided that henceforth any issues should be discussed internally.
He said that even the elected MLAs – Shullai and A. L. Hek were not taken into confidence before, Mawrie made his statement to the media demanding the resignation of the state Home Minister.
The South Shillong legislator also alleged that ever since Mawrie took over as the president of the BJP in Meghalaya the situation of the party is “decreasing and sinking”.
Shullai also that many party members who have left the party after Mawrie took over as BJP chief are willing to come back to the fold it they are insisted by him and Hek.
The BJP MLA from South Shillong said that soon a meeting of the party will be convened to discuss the matters.
