SHILLONG, May 9: The by-poll to the Amapti assembly seat may see a staright contest between, the ruling National People’s Party (NPP) and the opposition Congress after the BJP was undecided about its decision whether to contest or not.
It may be mentioned that during the February 27 assembly poll, the BJP had fielded retired sericulture director Bakul Hajong as it candidate. He however lost to former Chief Minister, Dr Mukul Sangma.
When contacted today, Hajong said that he was in talks with the state BJP leadership in Shillong and was awaiting for their decision.
“I will most likely not contest this time as being a part of the NDA coalition talks are on to drop my nomination. A decision is being taken currently by the state president along with other leaders on the matter. I will most likely not contest,” Hajong said.
Miani D Shira, the Congress candidate has already filed her nomination yesterday while NPP candidate, Clement G Momin in filed his papers today.
Hajong also ruled out contesting as an independent and will go with the decision of the party.
The last date of filing nominations is tomorrow, May 10.
