BJP threatens to withdraw support from MDA

Shillong, Sep 8 – The Bharatya Janata Party (BJP) on Tuesday threatened of withdrawing support from the Meghalaya Democratic Alliance (MDA) government if corruption is not stopped in the two Autonomous District Councils – Garo Hills Autonomous District (GHADC) and Jaintia Hills Autonomous District Council (JHADC) headed by the NPP.

The BJP is an ally of the MDA government led by National People’s Party (NPP) chief Conrad Sangma.

Addressing the media in a press conference, state BJP president Ernest Mawrie accused that the GHADC and the JHADC are misusing funds sanctioned under the Special Assistant Grant to develop the underdeveloped areas.

“The two councils have ‘misutilized’ the funds to pay salaries, make documentary films and radio jingles by quoting exorbitant prices and that tenders were allotted without following procedure while the guidelines clearly state that it should be for developmental works in underdeveloped areas,” Mawrie said.

Mawrie meanwhile said that the party has also demanded for a CBI inquiry into the alleged misuse of crores of rupees under the Special Assistant Grant in GHADC and JHADC on an urgent basis.

The state BJP president said that the party will try and speak to the State government and if corruption is not stopped in the two district councils, it is ready to pull off support.
