“Blue” Lukha River clears up amidst Lockdown

Shillong, Apr 10: The Lukha River, situated in East Jaintia Hills, which had turned blue in the past decade due to pollution caused by Limestone and Cement Factories, has reportedly cleared up amidst the lockdown called to prevent the spread of COVID-19.Images provided by Kynjaimon Amse, a resident of East Jaintia Hills, show that the Lukha River has shed its unnatural bluish hue.Amse shared pictures taken on Friday, 10 April 2020, which shows the difference. “The Lukha River in EJH which was bluish in colour prior to the Covid-19, today because of the lockdown it seems the river is making its way back to normalcy. The river can now be seen to be clean and its colour appears to be natural,” Amse said.Amse stated that due to the lockdown, all the cement factories and other mining work were forced to shut down in East Jaintia Hills District and their operation stopped since the beginning of the lockdown.“The lock down has enabled the Lukha River to regain its lost beauty. I can only hope that this last even when the lockdown is lifted,” he said.
