Book to spread awareness regarding environmental problems of Meghalaya released

Shillong, Jul 25: A book titled “In search of Green Awareness and practices” written by Dr Silse D. Marak, M.A., B.Ed., PhD was released on Saturday by Pro Vice Chancellor, NEHU Prof. G. Saingaiah and Former Pro Vice Chancellor NEHU Prof Milton S Sangma.

The book details the deteriorating health of Meghalaya’s environment resulting from increase in population, conversion of forest land into agricultural fields, shift in jhum cultivation, deforestation, urbanisation, mining and industrialization.

The author in her book highlights that sustainable development was the only solution to avert the situation.

She said that the goal of the book is to make people aware of and concerned about environmental problems and work individually and collectively towards solving current problems and preventing the occurrence of new ones.

“We cannot expect people to act in an appropriate way without being aware about the problems, their causes, the impact on our daily life and the long-term consequences. Hence, it was found appropriate to take up a study with regards to environmental awareness and practicesin relation to intelligence and socio-economic status among secondary school students in West Garo Hills district, Meghalaya,” the author stated.
