Shillong, Jan 23: United Democratic Party (UDP) general secretary, Jemino Mawthoh today said Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA), 2019 a wakeup call for the people of the northeast.
“The passing of the CAA by the Parliament was a wake up for the people of this region. For decades we have been fighting illegal immigration and the time has come for us to come up with something concrete to curb influx,” Mawthoh said after the Central Executive Committee (CEC) of the party.
Mawthoh also informed that the UDP executive had discussed at length on the issue of CAA and the Inner Line Permit.
When asked what will be the move of the UDP if the centre don’t implement ILP in the state, the UDP general secretary said that we need to be optimistic and to look for other opinions.
According to UDP general secretary, the Meghalaya Residents Safety and Security Act (MRSSA) will be one of the mechanisms to safeguard the rights of the indigenous people of the state.
“We need to have sincerity and commitment to come up with mechanisms, which will not infringe on the rights of the people and also not come in conflict with the provisions of the constitution,” the UDP general secretary added.
When asked about the delay of the centre to implement ILP, Mawthoh said that there may be a little bit of delay but the state government will follow up on the matter and be able to meet him.
When asked if the BJP government in the centre does not approve ILP for Meghalaya, whether the partners in the MDA remove the BJP, Lanong said, “Since we are in a coalition and there are many parties involved we can’t take up the matter on our own.”
