Shillong, June 19: Meghalaya Chief Electoral Officer Frederick R Kharkongor announced that out of the votes of the 60 MLAs for Rajya Sabha elections, 58 were valid, and two were declared invalid.
He informed that out of the valid 58 votes, 39 were in favour of Dr W R Kharlukhi, while Congress candidate Kennedy C Khyriem received 19 votes.
One vote was declared invalid, and the other vote belonged to KHNAM MLA Adelbert Nongrum who abstained from voting.
“One vote was rejected due to wrong marking in the ballot paper. As you all know this Rajya Sabha Elections, it follows a preferential voting pattern and in the counting process one vote was rejected because it was marked as a tick mark and not in numerical value,” he informed.
Kharkongor added that 57 MLAs voted in the first half of the voting session, and two MLAs turned up in the afternoon.
“It was free, fair and safe. Normally we have the objective to hold free and fair elections, but under COVID-19 we added a new word, safe,” he stated.
