SHILLONG, Jan 6: Opposition leader in Meghalaya, Dr Mukul Sangma on Sunday said that people in Delhi like Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, does not know about the intricacies and diversity of the nation.
Dr Sangma was reacting to the statement of Modi in the Parliament that his government was working to ensure the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill 2016 gets Parliaments’ nod.
The final report of the Joint Parliamentary Committee on the Citizenship Amendment Bill, will be submitted in Lok Sabha on Monday.
The Citizenship (Amendment) Bill 2016 seeks to amend the Citizenship Act, 1955. To grant nationality to people belonging to minority communities – Hindus, Sikhs, Buddhists, Jains, Parsis and Christians – in Afghanistan, Bangladesh and Pakistan after six years of their residence in India.
The opposition leader in Meghalaya called the move by the centre to proceed ahead with the proposed amendment of the Citizenship Act as “anti-people”.
“How does it help the nation? Rather they should know how it threatens the nation and the (indigenous) communities. Don’t they know the history, the culmination of the Assam accord, what was happening prior to Assam Accord, how many people have died and how this whole turmoil has actually vitiate the whole environment in the whole northeast and the result is that we lack behind,” Dr Sangma said after an emergent meeting of the Congress Legislature Party.
The opposition leader also said that as policy makers one must actually look at the fallout of every decision.
“Now if any policy is going to have this kind of vitiated environment created it will only further the sense of alienation among the people of this region,” Dr Sangma said.
He also urged the regional parties of the state to scrutinise and audit the intent and agenda of BJP and their comrades.
It may be mentioned that regional parties like the UDP, PDF and HSPDP are part of the Meghalaya Democratic Alliance coalition government led by National People’s Party along with two BJP MLAs.
