Tura, Mar 13: Congress MDC on Wednesday alleged that the National People’s Party (NPP) led EC of the Garo Hills Autonomous District Council (GHADC) has violated the model code of conduct by issuing cheques to withdraw 60% of the recently released Excluded Area Fund of Rs 31,00,40,000.
In a statement issued to the media on Wednesday, Congress MDC from Boldamgre, Stevie Marak alleged that the NPP led coalition had met on the night of March 11 at Circuit House, Tura, where they worked late on the amount of Rs 31,00,40000 which the GHADC received through the Excluded Area Fund from the Centre.
“They created minutes of a meeting which they backdated to March 7 and issued cheques to withdraw 60% of the recently released Excluded Area Fund of Rs 31,00,40,000. This is in total violation of the model code of conduct for the upcoming MP elections, which came in force when the election dates were announced,” said Stevie.
The Election Commission of India (ECI) announced the date of MP elections on Mar 10, Sunday.
Stevie alleged that it is an indication of malafide intention, where the money withdrawn will be used for the upcoming MP elections. More disturbing is the fact that the present Secretary, who is of MCS cadre, is also privy to and took part in this malpractice.
The MDC further said that the money was transferred from the Deputy Commissioner’s account to the GHADC account only on the Mar 8 (Friday evening) with Saturday and Sunday being bank holidays.
“The money sanctioned is for the development of Garo Hills and not to be used in the elections. Imagine even the projects of the previously sanctioned Rs 100 crore is still incomplete. There needs to be a CBI inquiry into this matter of misused public money,” alleged the MDC.
Taking notice of a violation of the model code of conduct, the Returning Officer (RO) of Tura parliamentary constituency, Ram Singh has served a show-cause notice to GHADC.
The notice was served for alleged violation of Model Code of Conduct, Singh said.
