Cong MLA backtracks on earlier party comment, says not satisfied with govt’s response to COVID-19

Shillong, Jul 20: Congress MLA from Rangsakona Zenith Sangma on Monday expressed his concern and discontentment over how the state government is handling the COVID-19 Pandemic and demanded the disclosure of COVID-19 patients’ names.

He said the government initially allowed stranded persons returning to the state to home quarantine themselves and added that only after returnees started testing positive, did they take the matter seriously.

Sangma said that in the initial phase, several returnees were allowed to renter the state after conducting only thermal screening, followed by home quarantine.

Citing an example of a person who tested positive after being released from an institutional quarantine after arriving from Chennai, he claimed that the virus could have already spread in the community.

Therefore, he stated that the only way to ensure the safety of the people is to reveal the names of all coronavirus patients in the state. He mentioned that he had raised the issue in the COVID-19 review meeting held last Thursday, but the government refused to take it forward.

It may be noted that in a joint press briefing after the meeting, Congress MLA Hima Shangpliang representing the opposition said that they were “satisfied” with how the state government is dealing with the pandemic.

He also added that even though wearing masks have been made compulsory, it is not being enforced on the ground.
