Cong MLA pens letter to Union Health Min over protest by NEIGRIHMS nurses

Shillong, June 17: Congress MLA from Mawlai P.T Sawkmie, on Wednesday penned a letter to Union Health Minister Harsh Vardhan asking him to step in and resolve reported COVID-19 mismanagement at NEIGRIHMS.

“I urge Union Health Minister Harsh Vardhan to step in and take the issue seriously. As we are aware that in NEIGRIHMS patients from all North-eastern states come for treatment. Because of this, nurses requested that they should be allowed to quarantine for their safety and for the safety of others,” he said.

Nurses from the institute on Tuesday staged a protest alleging mismanagement on the part of NEIGRIHMS administration which is risking their safety.

The nurses demanded formation of a COVID committee, a review of the current SOPs, quarantine for exposed staff, screening and testing of all health care workers and more.

Sawkmie commended the nurses for coming forward and expressing their concerns openly. “I express my gratitude to nurses from NEIGRIHMS because they have come out openly and stated the facts of what is going wrong in the institute,” he said.

He also added that since nurses are also front-liners in the fight against COVID-19, their demands should be met, so that they can give their best service.

“I am sure that Union Health Minister and the State Health Minister A.L Hek resolve this matter, so that there will be no spike in COVID cases in Meghalaya,” he said.
