Cong Spokesperson alleges irregularity in MeECL management

Shillong, Aug 17: Congress Spokesperson and MLA, Zenith Sangma, on Monday, criticized the state government for failing to address issues in the management of MeECL.

He alleged that the reason for the ‘mess’ in MeECL was due to the ‘weak’ leadership of the corporation.

He questioned as to why a junior officer in the rank of a Joint Secretary was appointed as the Chairperson cum Managing Director of the corporation.

The Rangsakona MLA stated that prior to this, various IAS officials, not less than Principal Secretary, Additional Secretary or Chief Secretary themselves were in charge of the corporation.

“Now only a junior official has been made the CMD of such a big company worth 2000 crores with 4000 employees. What is the intent of the government?” he asked.

Zenith also stated that he had brought the issue up in the floor of the house and Chief Minister Conrad Sangma had assured that a full-fledged Chairperson would be appointed. “But till date the same person has been lingering, this is for whose benefit?” he stated.

Without naming MeECL CMD A. Nikhla, he stated that she is holding the positions of Joint Secretary of Power, Director of Corporate Affairs and Director of Finance in the corporation. He alleged that this meant there was a monopoly in any important decision taken in the board of directors.

The MLA from Rangsakona also alleged that there was biasness in the appointment of 128 skilled multitasking assistants in the month of June and July this year.

He said that all 128 persons were recruited from Shillong and periphery areas and were only from one category.

Zenith added that an independent investigation should be conducted into this irregularity and that the person responsible should be booked.
