SHILLONG, Jun 19: The Congress, Members of District Council (MDCs) in the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) on Tuesday stated that their decision to support the ruling alliance in the council was to strengthen the demand for relocating the residents of Sweeper’s Colony from Them Ïew Mawlong.
The Congress leader in the KHADC who also represents Mawlai constituency as an MLA, Process T Sawkmie said that they decided to support the People’s Democratic Alliance (PDA) in the council over issues concerning the indigenous people like the proposed Citizenship (Amendment Bill) 2016 of the Centre.
On the issue of relocating the residents of Sweeper’s Colony, Sawkmie said that the KHADC has an important part to play with the cooperation of the Hima Mylliem.
However, Sawkmie stated that the decision to join the ruling coalition in the KHADC does not mean that the MDCs will not question the transgressions of the Executive Committee (EC) in the KHADC.
“If there is any drawbacks on the part of the EC the MDCs have to right to question or ask for clarification,” Sawkmie said.
Sawkmie also made it clear that the Congress extending support to the PDA in the Council was not with an intention to woo the partners of the Meghalaya Democratic Alliance (MDA) in the state.
He said that the Congress was happy to sit in the opposition in the Meghalaya Assembly.
