SHILLONG, Apr 2: Chief Minister and national president of the National People’s Party (NPP) Conrad K Sangma said that the national parties don’t understand the sentiments northeast people.
Drumming up support for Meghalaya Democratic Alliance (MDA) common candidate and UDP nominee Jemino Mawthoh during a rally in the city on Tuesday, Conrad said, “We have seen many situations wherein the national parties by just sitting in Delhi decide what is good or bad for the people of the region.”
Reminding the gathering about the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, the NPP national president pointed out that this was a clear example of how a national party would never understand the sentiments of the people of the region.
Attacking the Congress party for taking credit of stalling the Bill in the Rajya Sabha, Conrad said asked if their leaders had not written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi to congratulate him and urge him to pass it.
He also said that the time has come for people from within the region to take things into their own hands.
“We cannot allow our future to be controlled by people who are sitting in Delhi,” the NPP chief said.
Conrad also said that many governments from different political parties coined different policies for development of the region.
“One national party projected the idea of Look East and then another national party says Act East. Years have gone nobody looked or acted,” he said.
