Conrad: PDF not pulling out of govt

SHILLONG, Jul 6: Meghalaya Chief Minister, Conrad Kongkal Sangma on Friday said that all the MLAs of the People’s Democratic Front (PDF) are still with the Meghalaya Democratic Alliance (MDA) government.

Conrad’s statement comes in the wake of warning by PDF chief, Pynshngaiñ N Syiem that the party would pull out of the MDA if the four NPP MDCs withdraw support to the People’s Democratic Alliance (PDA) in Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council.

“As it stands, all the MLAs of the PDF are with us. We are moving ahead with all the policies. The PDF is not pulling out of the Government. I had a talk with all the MLAs of the PDF. There is no question of any withdrawal,” Conrad told media persons.

However, the Chief Minister said that it will not be correct on his part to comment anything on the development in the KHADC.

He pointed out that a couple of months back the same thing happened in the Jaiñtia Hills Autonomous District Council (JHADC) where the United Democratic Party (UDP) had formed the Executive Committee with the support of the Congress. It may be mentioned that the UDP is part of the MDA coalition.

However, on June 20, UDP member and CEM of the Jaiñtia Hill Council Moonlight Pariat tendered his resignation after he lost majority.

Pariat has lost majority in the House following the move to oust him from the CEM’s post.

The new executive committee under the leadership of MB Rymbai comprises of 11 NPP MDCs, eight Congress MDCs including a nominated member and three dissident UDP members.

Conrad while asserting that the District Council is a different entity, he said that such issues should be handled at that level while the issues at the state should be handled by the government.

Meanwhile, the Chief Minister also said that since the NPP led MDA government has taken over it has taken up various missions in the agriculture department and other departments too.

“There are many road projects which has been taken up in the last three to four months. Project worth about Rs 8000 crore has been sanctioned for Meghalaya. Governance is a long term process. There are enough missions to put our focus on things and plan it out well and we will succeed,”

Moreover, PDF legislator and Cabinet Minister, Banteidor Lyngdoh said that the party should not take any decision “immediately”.

Lyngdoh informed that all the four PDF MLAs, met on Thursday evening to discuss the matter of withdrawing support from the government.

“We will meet again today. We have also met PDF chairman (Syiem). We will sort it out,” the Agriculture Minister added.

It may be pointed out that Four PDF legislators – Hamletson Dohling, Banteidor Lyngdoh, Jason Sawkmie Mawlong and Gavin Miguel Mylliem – are part of the MDA government and two among them, Hamlet and Banteidor, are Cabinet ministers.
