Shillong, Apr 7: Meghalaya Police on Tuesday revealed that they have registered 4 cases in relation with circulating and propagating of fake news and rumour mongering on COVID-19 pandemic.
G.K Iangrai, Assistant Inspector General of Police (A), stated that out of the 4 cases, 3 were registered with Cyber Crime Police Station and 1 case has been registered in Williamnagar police station.
“Out of the 4 cases, three have been registered after the applications which have been received through the fake news verification portal have been verified to be fake news,” Iangrai stated.
Further a content uploaded on a Facebook Page “Ka Sur U Paidbah” was also reportedly found to be fake and a case was lodged.
“Similarly the other cases which have been registered include a post regarding a person who has been infected with COVID-19, a post regarding the WHO Protocol and Procedures for Lockdown and several other fake news,” Iangrai revealed.
He urged the general public from refraining from propagating and circulating fake news and rumours regarding COVID_19 pandemic through social media and other platforms.
To verify information relating to COVID-19, citizens have been requested to make use of www.megpolice.gov.in. Information can also be validated by checking verified information uploaded on www.megpolice.gov.in/covid-19-fake-news or through Meghalaya Police Facebook and Twitter pages.
