SHILLONG, Jun 11: The East Khasi Hills district administration has appointed magistrates to investigate reported cases of exorbitant pricing of essential commodities.
It may be mntioned that there were numerous complaints from people that shopkeepers and retailers were arbitrarily hiking the prices of essential commodities taking advantage of the panic due to the curfew imposed in the city after the violent protest in Motphran and adjoining areas.
On Monday, East Khasi Hills Deputy Commissioner, Peter Sansan Dkhar informed this when members of the UDP Youth Wing met him in his office chamber.
“On his part the DC informed us that he has appointed magistrates to investigate cases of exorbitant pricing by shopkeepers,” General Secretary of the UDP Youth Wing, Manbha Syiemlieh said.
It may be mentioned that on Saturday, the district administration had warned retailers and shop keepers who are taking advantage of the prevailing situation in the City and selling essential items at unreasonable and exorbitant price.
“After assessing the stock position of essential commodities with traders and stockiest, there is no shortage of essential items. Therefore there is no reason for retailers and shop keepers to hike the prices of essential items,” the Deputy Commissioner had said even as he warned of taking strong action against retailers, shop keepers if found selling essential items at unreasonable and exorbitant price.
