Doctors in Meghalaya to wear black badges in protest against nod to Ayush doctors to conduct surgeries

SHILLONG, Dec 7: The Meghalaya Chapter of the Indian Medical Association (IMA) will wear black badges on Tuesday against the decision of the Central Council of Indian Medicine (CCIM) for allowing Ayurvedic doctors to conduct surgeries.

As per a statement issued by the Dr Bernard T Lyngdoh, Spokesperson, IMA Meghalaya State, while offering their support to its central body against this irrational policy all members from Meghalaya and all doctors from modern medicine who is in support of the stand of IMA central body shall wear black badges in support of the association.

A recent circular of CCIM paving the way for Ayurvedic post-graduate doctors to perform various surgeries which are otherwise carried out by well-trained modern day surgeons under the modern medical system has shocked not only the medical fraternity but also many concerned citizens.

The IMA said that it is highly perturbed by the recent policy proposals for integration of all systems of medicine, and termed it as a ‘khichidi medical system’ which could put millions of lives at risk.

The IMA representing doctors of modern medicine said it stands for purity of systems of both modern medicine as well as Ayush, but integrating them would create hybrid doctors ultimately confusing and putting patients at risk.
