Shillong, Mar 12: The Meghalaya Cabinet on Thursday approved the draft of the Meghalaya Drug Abuse Prevention Policy.

The need for a policy on Drug Abuse Prevention was brought forward by the Social Welfare Department as the state currently has no policy in regards to drug abuse.

Briefing the media after the cabinet meet, Minister James Sangma said that drug abuse was a very serious problem that is plaguing the society especially the youth.

“It was felt that we need to have a drug policy and this Drug Abuse Prevention Policy 2020 has been proposed and accepted by cabinet and this draft has come into effect from today,” Sangma said.

He further added that a much more concerted effort is required to tackle the menace and therefore government has decided to come out with this policy so that it can tackle the menace in a better and coordinated manner.

“Drug policy has been brought about because there is a growing concern about the drug abuse and the fact that we need to have a specific government policy to tackle this because the drug menace is not about just catching peddlers,” he said.

Sangma said that the policy is a comprehensive one and there are many aspects to it like prevention, treatment, aftercare capacity building and training for those who are involved with the drug addicts.

The minister informed that research in the field of preventing drug abuse is still lacking however he pointed out that there is a component for the drug supply reduction strategy.

“Policy implementation and coordination mechanisms is also part of the policy to make sure that the fast track courts and special courts have stronger and bigger role to play,” he added.
