Shillong, June 26: Meghalaya Deputy Minister Prestone Tynsong on Friday informed that a draft notification regarding exemption of payment of school fees, tuition fees and private hostel fees due to COVID-19 was approved at the review meeting held on Friday.
He informed that a notification will be issued by the Education Department tomorrow.
Tynsong revealed the notification will also include private run hostels and paying guests. “Proprietors of private owned hostels in Meghalaya are directed to seize and desist from charging rent from students during the period of the lockdown beginning from April 1st 2020 till further orders,’’ he said.
He said that students who left the hostels before the lockdown started will not be required to pay fees, however, those students who continued to reside in the hostels will have to pay their fees.
Regarding payment of salary for private school teachers, Tynsong said that as per the Disaster Management Act 2005 and Meghalaya School Education Act 1973, private school administrations are bound to pay the salaries.
