‘Education important tool to fight social evils’

Workshop on Crime against Women and Children

SHILLONG, May 17:  SPARK organised a four-day Workshop on sensitising the teachers, community leaders and youth on   “Crime against Women and Children: Their Roles and Responsibilities in Preventing it”.

The workshop organised from May 14th to 17th were held at various places – Mawlynrei Village, Mawlong Village and Punjabi Line thereby building up the capacity of the community people to fight against any crime against women and children.

The objective of the workshop was to help building the capacity of important members of the community such as teachers, community leaders, youths and others as well as to empower them to deal with various social issues concerning women and children and to build up a collaborative effort as well as coordination among the members of the community at different levels to address the issue concerned.

During the workshop, necessary information was provided to participants with regards to crime against women and children and various welfare schemes thereby building up the capacity of the participants to fight against such crimes and protect themselves from all forms of exploitation.

Guests and speakers stressed on the importance of education and considering it as an important tool to fight against all social evils existing in the community and society at large.

  1. Lyngdoh, Deputy SP (City), Shillong acquainted the participants on cyber crimes which is increasing on an alarming rate.

Lyngdoh  briefed them on its preventive measures besides acquainting them on other aspects of crimes to which the community may fall victim to if they are alert about it.

Ibalari Synrem of CHILDLINE Shillong explained the participates about child abuse and ways to prevent it.

On the other hand, Ivy Warjri, Mission Director of Social Welfare Department highlighted on the rights of children as well as the different forms of violence.

Warjri also informed them of the different Government schemes towards the welfare and protection of women and children.

Similarly, various other Resource Persons too spoke on different other social issues  stressing on the roles and the responsibilities of the community  to fight against it as well as to make efforts towards its prevention.

Documentary films on issues pertaining to Child Rights, Human Trafficking and Crime against Women were also screened which led to a strong impact on the participants.
