Election Commission seize 55 lakh cash so far in Meghalaya

Rs 6.40 lakhs cash seized in West Garo Hills

SHILLONG, April 07: Chief Electoral Officer, Federick Kharkongor on Sunday said that so far about Rs 55 lakhs cash was seized in the State.

The Election department have been conducting special drives for the last one month as per the Election Commission guidelines.

On reliable information, the Flying Squad Teams along with Garo Hills police laid a checking point on Saturday and seized Rs 6,40,000 cash at Hallydayganj area under Hallydayganj Police Station of 48-Selsella(ST), West Garo Hills.

According to inputs from the office of CEO, the cash was seized at about 10:45 am on Saturday.

“Rs. 4,80,000 has been seized from one Saha at about 10.45 am and Rs. 1,60,000 from one F Seikh at about 11:00 am,” said Kharkongor.

The CEO informed that the seized money has been kept in safe custody of Tura Treasury Strong Room.

Kharkongor also said that they are verifying the flow and the role of cash in election process.

He said till now an amount of Rs. 55 lakhs approximately was seized.

It may be reminded, 22 out of 60 Assembly constituencies in Meghalaya are identified as expenditure sensitive.

The state Election department also foresee that cash may be used to influence voters in the 22 constituencies.
