Tura, July 25: Five labourers, four from Assam and another from North Garo Hills were killed after the road construction machine they were pushing got caught in a low lying, high tension wire. Another three workers, who were also at the same site were also severely injured and were rushed to the town of Goalpara for medical care.
The incident occurred this afternoon at about 4:30 pm in the village of Miapara under Mendipathar PS in North Garo Hills.
According to police sources, the incident occurred as the workers were rolling the machinery along the road when the machine hit the HT wire (11KV) overhead.
“According to preliminary information received, earth work had been filled up on the road leading to the increase in the height of the road. However no application was sought to increasing the height of the wires. The labourers supposedly did not see the overhanging wire and were killed on the spot when the machine contacted the HT wire,” said DSP of NGH, Nikcheng Momin.
The matter was informed about an hour after it occurred to the police.
