Tura, July 7: The United Democratic Party (UDP) today received another boost with the former CEM of GHADC, Boston Marak joining its fold.
The former CEM and two time MDC from Nogorpara was welcomed by the Garo Hills general secretary, Utzol Sangma, state vice president – Utpal Arengh, state joint secretary – Linden Momin and state youth joint secretary, Anand Marak.
With the joining of Boston, UDP is set to have representation within the GHADC as well.
“I wanted to be a part of a party that has stood for progress of the state and thus my decision to join the UDP,” said Boston on the reason for joining.
“After the elections this year, we felt the need to further strengthen the party at the grassroot level in Garo Hills. The best way to do so was to hold a meeting and give the reins of this push to various people. Our meeting today was aimed at that,” said general secretary of Garo Hills region – UDP, Utzol Sangma.
“The last election was a very bad show for our party in Garo Hills and we were towards the bottom of even the vote share pattern. Given the fact that we are currently a part of the ruling government, we decided to work harder to ensure Garo Hills made a bigger contribution the next time,” said Anand Marak.
An executive meeting of the party was also held at Mondoltilla on the same day wherein the party members chose new office bearers to lead its push to develop its base in the region.
The meeting today dissolved all the previous committees to the party and chose three new sections, general, women’s wing and the youth wing to push its growth within Garo Hills.
The party in WGH will be led by president, Goldling R Sangma and secretary – Tilbert A Sangma. The women’s wing will see Dr Jova Ch Marak as president and Smera Sangma as the working president while LK Gracy will be the secretary. The youth wing will be led by Lyon Ch Marak as president and Jimberth Ch Momin as secretary. More new office bearers for the party in WGH were also chosen.
Utpal Arengh felt that the result of the last election has left a huge question mark on the party and they all needed to answer.
“Our party is corruption free and has educated leaders. We don’t buy votes and this has to be pushed through to all voters as votes are important. We hope the new group of people in our party will push the party to greater heights in the coming future,” said vice president, Utpal Arengh.
“We are looking to revamp all the other districts as well so that we can push the developmental agenda of our party through Garo Hills,” added Utzol, GH secretary.
