Ganesh Das Hospital death reflection of Govt inefficiency: Congress

Shillong, Jul 30: Meghalaya Congress, on Thursday, strongly condemned the incident at Ganesh Das Hospital, wherein a newly born baby died after the hospital delayed admission of the pregnant woman for being a resident of a containment zone.

In a statement to the press, Congress Spokesperson and MLA Zenith Sangma said that it was due to negligence on the part of the authority and that issuing a show cause notice is not going to help.

“It is the reflection of inefficiency and lack of experience of the leadership for governance,” he stated.

“The Hospital authority, at the first instance, should not have denied to admit the patient…This is nothing but social stigmatization made by the Hospital staffs,” he said.

Zenith stated that the government should come up with strong legislative or ordinance by making social stigma a criminal offence.

He added that the Government has proven itself as insensitive by declaring certain areas as containment zones without any preparedness.

“When certain area is declared as containment zone, they are curtailing the rights of the residents, neither they are allowed to come out. Therefore, it is incumbent upon the Government to ensure that the residents get proper food and other essential commodities mandated by the Disaster Management Act, 2005,” he stated.

Zenith added that even after the opposition gave constructive suggestions, the government has termed it political play in a “time of crisis.”
