Garo Hills: Samanda Forest beat office in vandalized

Tura, Mar 22: Unidentified miscreants, suspected to have been instigated by a well known timber smuggler, vandalized the office of the GHADC Forest Beat office at Samanda after the check gate stopped an illegal timber truck the previous day. The incident occurred on Mar 18 about 10 kms from the district headquarter of East Garo Hills, Williamnagar.

The incident has raised alarm at the extent of influence a cross border smuggler holds on the people of the region, most of whom are allegedly involved in the entire illegal timber smuggling business which has affected most of the forest reserves of the EGH district, especially the Rongrenggre Reserve Forest.

According to the complaint filed by the GHADC Range Forest Office of Williamnagar Range, ranger James G Momin, the incident took place at about 11:30 pm when unidentified miscreants vandalized the office.

The officers suspect the entire incident was instigated by one Md Siddique (of Assam), who is a well known smuggler in the parts. Earlier on Mar 17, the state forest department had seized a truck of illegal timber logs near the village of Megapgre under Samanda block at about 1:30 pm.

The act of seizing timber by the authorities is suspected to be behind the attack on the GHADC beat office.
