Governor commends Dy CM’s warning to persons behind NHIDCL arson case

Shillong, June 13: Meghalaya Governor Tathagata Roy on Saturday commended Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong’s warning to perpetrators who hurled a petrol bomb at NHIDCL office in Shillong and torched a vehicle belonging to a government official at Mawkyrwat, South West Khasi Hills district.

Taking to twitter, he wrote, “No NGO,however well-intentioned,can be allowed to usurp the functions of lawful authority eg police. No such authority can outsource its functions to any NGO. No one but such authority can lay its hands on a citizen of India. The warning by the Dy CM is both topical and timely.”

The Deputy CM on Friday warned miscreants who indulge in acts of violence and arson and said that the government will not tolerate such incidents.

“These sort of people are trouble makers with nothing worthwhile to do. The government won’t sit quite in the interest of the State,” he said.

On Thursday, a petrol bomb was allegedly hurled at the office of the NHIDCL at Kharmalki wherein, the accountant’s room was partially damaged.

The same afternoon a government vehicle of District Social Welfare Officer of South West Khasi Hills district, L Lyngdoh was set ablaze at Mawkyrwat market.

Further on Sunday, NHIDCL engineer Sujit Kumar Singh and his driver were assaulted by a group of about 10-12 unidentified persons at Nonglang village in South West Khasi Hills district.
