Govt assures relief for villages hit by rain, hailstorms

Shillong, March 31: Government today promised to take all administrative and relief measures to help people in areas hit by rain and hailstorm in West Khasi Hills, West and East Jaintia Hills and parts of East Khasi hills.

Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma on Saturday convened an emergency meeting with his cabinet, Chief Secretary, Additional Chief Secretary in charge Disaster Management and other senior officials at the Secretariat.
The Chief Minister has directed to provide immediate temporary relief to the affected villages. Preliminary report states that over 50 villages in different parts of the State have been affected due to severe hailstorm.
The Government is making assessment on the extent of damages to houses, crops, livestock and other properties.
The Chief Minister said , “The focus of the Government is to provide maximum help to the people. All the concern departments have been asked to attend to the needs of the people. We are working on war footing to provide temporary relief to the affected villages.”
On Friday afternoon, a massive hailstorm has severely damaged crops and tiled roofs of more than 50 villages in different parts of Meghalaya eastern region.
Most of the hailstones, is as big as table tennis balls and hit the villages since 11:30 am.
