Shillong, Mar 17: Deputy Chief Minister, Prestone Tynsong on Wednesday said that the government was looking for an alternative site for setting up a cattle market.
Replying to short duration discussion during the ongoing session of the Meghalaya Assembly, Tynsong said that space in the present cattle market in Khanapara, Ri-Bhoi district is limited.
“The government will build the infrastructure in the new location which will also have a dispensary (for cattle) functioning 24×7,” Tynsong said.
On the FIR filed by certain groups from outside the State alleging cruelty to animals in the present cattle market in Khanapara which has led to its closure, the Deputy Chief Minister who is in charge Animal Husbandry and Veterinary department said that the FIR filed by them should not be entertained, even as he said that the cattle market will be reopened soon.
He also said that the role of the government and the veterinary department in the cattle market is limited to assisting the Syiem of Mylliem and the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) in checking the health conditions of the animals.
Earlier moving the discussion, Umroi MLA, George Lyngdoh called for the registration of the genuine cattle buyers with the Veterinary department from the market in Khanapara.
“The registration system will pin point the actual requirement of a butcher,” Lyngdoh said.
He said this way it will curtail out bidding and out pricing and the butchers will not get affected.
