Govt to meet over Lokayukta’s appointment

SHILLONG, Mar 24: Chief Minister, Conrad Sangma on Saturday said that the state government would soon start the process to appoint a Lokayukta.

“The selection committee and the high powered committee are there with the Chief Justice, Chief Minister, Leader of Opposition and the Speaker and this committee will sit very soon and we will start the process,” Conrad said.

On Friday, The Supreme Court on Friday pulled up 11 states for not appointing lokayuktas and uplokayuktas, even five years after the enactment of the Lokpal and Lokayuktas Act, 2013.

The Chief Minister informed that because the Chairman of the first committee refused to accept the post, all the effort were in vain. So now the whole exercise will be done again.

He informed that earlier, a high powered committee was selected along with the Chairman.

“But when the appointment was about to be given, elections came and the process could not be completed. So now we are going to do it. Now that the new government is formed , we will call a meeting again and all procedures are already in place,” he added.
