Shillong, Aug 19: Meghalaya Agriculture Minister Banteidor Lyngdoh, on Wednesday, informed that the government will pay two percent of interest for farmers who have availed loans through Kisan Credit Card (KCC).

He added that although loans taken by farmers under KCC cannot be waived off, the farmers will now have to pay only five percent interest.

The Agriculture Minister held a meeting with various farmer associations, officers from Agriculture and Horticulture Department at Seminar Hall Directorate of Agriculture, Cleve Colony earlier today.

Speaking to reporters after, he stated that there will not be any public celebrations for Farmers’ year due to the pandemic.

He also stated that there are several farmer markets that have reopened all over the state including Upper Shillong, Lad Smith and more so farmers have no problem in selling their produce.

Banteidor informed that a major problem that was discussed at the meeting was regarding ‘harassment’ of vehicles transporting vegetables.

He said that he has informed district authorities not to halt any vehicle that have been provided with passes by the department.
