Grandpa rapes granddaughter in Kharkutta, North Garo Hills

Tura, Apr 18: Garo Hills police today arrested one 60 year old Deny Marak in the village of Kama Gandim under Kharkutta in NGH for allegedly raping his own 7 year old grand-daughter.

The case gets even murkier after family sources added that the accused had even raped his own daughter when she was younger, though there was no complaint lodged by them at the point.

The ghastly incident took place last Tuesday, April 10 with the case being registered only today.

“He tried to lure her with money and had even threatened her after the incident to not disclose to anyone. However she finally broke her silence and narrated the incident to her family members after which the villagers caught hold of the culprit and handed him over to the police,” said activist Jaynie N Sangma, who was in Kharkutta to assist the family.

The case of rape was confirmed by the superintendent of police of NGH, Dalton Marak. “He (Deny) has been arrested and all formalities are currently being undertaken. The incident is too heart wrenching to say the least,” said Dalton.

Incidentally the victim and her family were thrown out of the house of the culprit a few months ago. However the girl would keep her study book in her grandfather’s place as her tuition classes were nearby his house.

“On that day, at about 3 pm, the girl had gone to her grandfather’s house to pick up her books when he suddenly locked the room with her inside, grabbed her and sexually assaulted the young child,” said afamily source.

The culprit has also been accused of trying to sexually assault other young girls though they were able to evade him all times.

“This is unbelievable and unthinkable. To think of a grandfather raping his granddaughter is unheard of. The culprit needs to be severely punished to the extent of his punishment acting as a deterrent for such acts in the future. What culture are we giving to our children to live through,” said Jaynie on the incident.
“A 7 year old does not even know enough of the world to begin with and to think that the person who was supposed to protect her is the same one that has ravaged here life is a shame. What kind of thinking do they carry,” said a resident NN Marak from Tura upon learning of the incident.
