SHILLONG, Apr 13: With infrastructures, especially stadiums needed to be built for the 2022 National Games, the Meghalaya government is looking for investments from within the state, centre, partners and funds in the form of loans, the Meghalaya Assembly was informed on Friday.
Conrad K Sangma while replying to the debate on the Budget discussion on Friday said that the National Games Organising Committee is on the task to raise funds for the national event.
“We will need a different budget for the National Games the current budget is not a reflection for the event,” Conrad told the House.
Fending off criticisms from the opposition benches that the budget for the year 2018-19 did not allocate more funds to Sports keeping in view the upcoming National Games in 2022, the Chief Minister said that this year’s budget was not made with the event in mind.
“Even if the budget allocations of seven to eight departments are clubbed together the budget for the National Games will not be enough,” he added.
Earlier, Conrad informed the House that the Meghalaya State Olympic Association (MSOA) has suggested the state government to allocate funds to different sports association in view of the 2022 games.
He said that this was proposed with a view to promote talents in the various disciplines so that sportspersons of the state can win medals when the games is held in Meghalaya.
On criticism that the legislators do not get enough funds for sporting activities, Conrad urged the legislators to utiltise the Special Rural Works Programme (SRWP) for funding sports related activities.
