SHILLONG, May 29: Union Textiles Minister, Smriti Zubin Irani on Tuesday scoffed at Congress president, Rahul Gandhi’s claim that the Congress will come back to power in 2019.
“I do politics from the region where Congress president, Rahul Gandhi does politics. In Amethi (Rahul’s constituency) he has lost every Assembly and local elections in the last four years. A person who is not guaranteed to come back in his own constituency, what are his chances of coming back in the country?” Irani asked.
The Union Textiles Minister was addressing media persons on the four years of the BJP-led NDA government.
On Tuesday, NIFT also hosted Irani on its 7th convocation day where 65 students were handed over graduation certificates.
Mocking at Gandhi, Irani said that people in Amethi are not happy and he is talking about development in different parts of the country.
She pointed out that during the tenure of the BJP government it inaugurated the Passport Office, the Chief Medical Officer’s office and the District Collector’s office, in Amethi, while the Congress did nothing for its own bastion.
“How can he talk about development in the country?” Irani asked.
When reminded of the Congress’ claims that the BJP-led NDA government in the centre was inaugurating projects in the northeast started by the UPA regime in the past, Irani pointed out that NITI Aayog, MUDRA loan and the Jandhan Yojana were project initiated by the current dispensation.
The Union Textiles Minister also claimed that the BJP government in the centre was doing a lot for the development of the northeast.
“There is infrastructure thrust in the northeast and this push for the region is a reflection of the Prime Minister, Narendra Modi’s believe that the sun of development of a new India will rise from this region,” Irani said.
She pointed out that a NITI forum for the northeast was formed recently and the first meeting was held on May 10.
She said that the Congress right now is limiting itself only to rhetoric.
“The BJP is coming with hard facts and number to the people. As a member of the BJP I don’t expect the opposition to be kind. But I will expect them to look at the facts before themselves,” Irani said.
The Union Textiles Minister also said that when the BJP came to power in 2014, the economic condition of the country specially with regards the scams left behind by the UPA, the debts and the kind of financial challenges left behind in each sectors is what the BJP led Government has addressed.
