Jemino Mawthoh: Congress too were belligerent about CAB

SHILLONG, May 28: United Democratic Party (UDP) candidate from Shillong Lok Sabha seat during the recently concluded election, Jemino Mawthoh said that even the Congress party was belligerent on the issues of Citizenship Amendment Bill (CAB), Cow Slaughter and Anti-Conversion law.

“But now they have lowered the volume,” Mawthoh said.

The UDP candidate who lost to Congress’ Vincent H Pala by a margin of 1.52 lakh votes said that the Congress since 1947 were in favour of giving citizenship to persecuted Hindus coming from Bangladesh and Pakistan.

According to him, more recently former Congress Prime Manmohan Singh and ex Chief Minister of Assam Tarun Gogoi has also batted for the same.

Mawthoh also pointed out that the ban on cow slaughter was first initiated by Congress Prime Minister Late Indira Gandhi in 1982 when she asked 14 states of the country to enact a law. He also said that the anti conversion bill was first introduced in Himachal Pradesh in 2007 where Congress government was in power.

Mawthoh’s outbursts against the Congress came after he accused the latter of spreading misinformation that the UDP was part of the BJP.

He also said that the people should understand these issues and not to be misled by the Congress.

He admitted that due to the sustained campaign by the Congress on the issue of CAB many electorates did not vote for the regional party.

“CAB is not the issue of BJP alone but also of the Congress, but due to paucity of time we could not make people understand,” Mawthoh said.
