Shillong, May 6: The Khasi Students’ Union, on Wednesday, reported an app called “Begin Live App” to CID for allegedly misusing the location of the state, along with pictures of women, and promoting their ad on Facebook.
In their report to Aditya Goenka, SSP, CID Meghalaya, KSU General Secretary Donald V Thabah stated that the developers of the app were “luring” installers with pictures of women.
“We came to know that it has been developed through bots to automatically video call/message any installer of the app by luring them with women pictures whether with consensus or without is highly questionable,” the report read.
According to pictures attached, the ads by the app uses Meghalaya’s location with pictures of women as promotion.
Further, the Union stated that even before the app works, the installer is automatically directed to payment mode for messaging and video calling.
The Union also stated, “This app has been developed in Hong Kong by the address Rm906 Tower A, Viking Technology and Business Center, 93 Ta chuen Ping Street, Kwai C and the email- firstname.lastname@example.org as shown in Google Play store.”
The Union also raised concerns over the misuse of social media platforms to objectify women and minor girls and said, “It might be an easy way for these developers to channelize then to the prostitution-like industry.”
“The developer of the app is highly questionable whether it is from overseas or not, these apps need to be highlighted to the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting to monitor and take strict measures and action,” the Union added.
