Labour Dept issues instructions to Employers, Rs 1000/week to building & construction workers

Shillong, Mar 23: Meghalaya Labour Department on Monday issued strict instructions for Employers, Owners of Public and Private establishments taking in consideration the “lockdown” to prevent spread of COVID-19 in the state.

The order issued by D.P Wahlang, Principal Secretary to Government of Meghalaya, Labour Department states that employees are not to be terminated or forced to go on leaves without remuneration.

It also states that if any worker takes leave, they should be deemed to be on duty without any consequential deduction in wages. If the place of employment is to be made “non-operational” due to COVID-19, the employees will be deemed on duty.

The order states that no action should be taken by the employer which could weaken the financial condition of the employee and deepen the crisis further.

Rs 1000/week to building & construction workers

Meanwhile, the Meghalaya labour Department also announced that they have decided and approved to pay Rs 1000 to building and other construction workers who have been registered with the Labour Commissioner.

According to the order issued by the Principal Secretary to Government of Meghalaya, Labour Department, this will be applicable from Monday onwards till 29th March, 2020.

The decision was taken to mitigate the distress faced by building and other construction workers. They will be paid Rs 1000 per week for the wages forgone on account of the shutdown on commercial and business establishments in the state.
